The Eagle and the Wolf: A Love Between Sky and Earth

We were an unlikely fit from the start — the city‑sleek boy and the nerdy farm girl. I was the dream your mother hoped you’d choose, and perhaps the fear mine prayed I wouldn’t. Bad boys and nerdy girls rarely make sense, but sometimes the puzzle only works because the pieces are opposite. And so we held hands and fitted our edges.

You called me the chaos of change.

I called you the comfort of familiarity.

You said I was independent.

I said you were spoilt.

You spoke of who you used to be, who you wanted to be, who you should have been.

I spoke of now — of presence, of choosing what is here.

You wanted me.

I wanted you.

And with us - no differences ever mattered, it was only ever just you and me.

Love, I’ve learned, is not the absence of contrast. It is the acceptance of it. It is choosing to build legacies or to simply be experiences. It is exploring or sitting still. It is chaos or comfort — and sometimes both at once.

But choices carry chaos, and comfort carries safety. And in the quiet moments, I realised something simple: love can be true, loyalty can be real, and all I want is for you to be you.

His fear is loss — so he protects himself by pulling inward, guarding his heart

My fear is confinement — my wings being clipped, my spirit ever being ordinary

He moves into self‑preservation.

I move into self‑expansion.

He holds his heart tight.

I hold my freedom wide.

And in that tension — between a man who fears losing love and a woman who fears losing herself — we try to meet without shrinking, without retreating, without abandoning the truth of who we are.

Choosing, finding, and growing — that is love in its everyday form.

Then came the moment we broke.

You were gone, and I was left with a spinning head and a racing heart, searching for my centre as the ground fell away. I shattered slowly — first seconds, then minutes, then hours. Time moved quickly while my mind froze in a single burning moment.

Darkness crept in, steady and unhurried, swallowing the light. In the still night, the haunting began. Cold on my skin, panic in my chest. In my dream, I called out — lost, frightened. And you appeared, saying, I am here. Nostalgia and hope wrapped around me like a blanket. The dream felt safer than waking. The war quieted.

But the war was never about you. It was the girl versus the woman.

I’ve known the woman for almost half a century. The girl is only three. Forgive me for protecting the woman — she is familiar, she is practiced, she is who I know how to be. The girl is new, unsteady, learning. She terrifies me. Her love is raw, wild, temperamental — but unwavering. You cannot get one without the other because that which you love lies in both - equal forces of nature.

Perhaps the reasons no longer matter. Perhaps the truth is simple: I trusted fate to bring us together, and destiny to keep us bound.

So why should you sacrifice what you need — warm hands, a body beside you at every sunrise and sunset? The foolish woman already knows the answer. The girl is still hoping you choose her. Will a realistic man choose a free-spirited woman - He promises her routine; all she promises is adventure - new countries, new people, new things to learn, new things to see - the world is so big.

All I can offer is what is already yours.

Whether it is enough, I do not know.

Whether you are the boy my heart chooses — always — of that I was always certain.

“He guards his heart. I guard my wings.”
“He guards his heart. I guard my wings.”
